About the newsletter

Na'u ka hau'oli. A generously translated feel infuses the meaning of this monthly weave of story. I see it as  ... "Heaped, and overflowing with the good stuff"My twist to "You're welcome, or, "My pleasure." *

* As I played with the idea and the feelings about this new project I asked this question:

Aloha my 'olelo hawaii (Hawaiian speaking sistas) tita,
I'm working on a newsletter and am playing with this title
Na'u ka hau'oli . What does that mean to you? How would you translate it? What vibe do you get when you hear it?
This could be a fun one, I'm hoping the translation fits  the vibe. Any thoughts or ideas let them fly my way.
Mahalo nui xo

I received these two responses, and mahalo these tita for their time and mana'o:

"Aloha nō!
Well, my 'ōlelo is pretty limited... but I would translate it "Mine da happiness / delight / pleasure" - joy is the feeling I have or feel, in me, in my na'au.

Apparently, it can be a response to "mahalo" as in the "pleasure is mine."

However, depending on context, I think it can be much deeper, if you are feeling inner joy or delight yourself for whatevah reason.

Hope that helps? Hope that's what you're feeling :)"

"Aloha!

I've learned this phrase na‘u/no‘u ka hau‘oli in a hawaiian language learning book when I was in high school. It's one of those "hawaiian-ised" phrases from english meaning the pleasure is mine. Most often ‘a‘ole pilikia is used as a reply to mahalo. I also hear he mea iki meaning it's a small thing. Personally, I don't use the phrase naʻu ka hauʻoli and prefer using he mea iki. To me there's a different twist with the later phrase like it was not taxing on me to give or do for someone else, I just gave what I had without expectations or hau‘oli... Hope there was something in there for you."

Blogging has been my creative outlet, and passion for many years; and my interest persists. Mainly an example  of the gift economy, my writing has served my need to communicate and over time my small and loyal readers have encouraged my writing with comments and gifts. Thank you all very much!

Na'u ka  hau'oli (pronounced NAH-oo kah how oh lee) is my first newsletter. Rather than being written and linked in an email to my email list, Na'u will be introduced in that as-before style of an email with a  link. But in the coming months on the full moons, you will need to SUBSCRIBE to receive the overflow  of goodies.

UPDATE: March 25, 2021. I've reconsidered. SUBSCRIBING using google works for some, for not most. So, if you can SUBSCRIBE, wonderful but if you can't I will return to my old school methodology: an email blast with a link to read these monthly newsletter.

The photograph of my son and his son embody the mana'o for this newsletter best of all. See what I mean?

Hope you enjoy the newsletter. You can SUBSCRIBE (spot the 'SUBSCRIBE' button in the middle of the page & provide the email info), or UNSUBSCRIBE, at any time.

Aloha,

Mokihana
